Hey, it’s Bradley, one of the co-founders of The UpDown Market. One of my favorite parts of building this market is getting a front row seat to how community shapes local makers. For me, that story is personal. My nephew is the woodworker behind King Turning, a small brand he’s building right here in Durham. Most days, you’ll find him in a backyard shed, covered in sawdust, turning rough blocks of wood into smooth, finished pieces. He hasn’t been doing it alone. He’s been sharpening his skills at @thebullcitywoodshop in East Durham — a community woodshop that gives people access to tools, training, and a safe space to try, mess up, and try again. Bull City Woodshop started with a simple question: “What happens when you give people, especially young people, real support and real mentorship?” Over the years, they’ve helped beginners become makers, and makers become small business owners. This year, they’re bringing that spirit to The UpDown Market as one of our vendors. My nephew will be set up in their booth along with his friends, standing alongside the very people who’ve been investing in his growth.
